Going Digital

So last week, we were introduced to the program TV Paint. We did a bird's flightcycle and a couple of walkcycles, on realistic and by the book and one more cartoony. Here's the cartoony one, which I liked the best.

Animation in the New Year

Last week we had the first proper animation assignments of the year. Two fairly quick ones and a three-day test.

First, a tired headturn. Could also have chosen angry and shy, but that Monday morning 'tired' was the obvious choice.

Next, an assignment we only had the day to complete - no after school work. This was fun. Hope you'll notice I gave the character some attitude.

Then the test. Three days to get Danny to jump over a manhole.

Design 2 with Lawrence Marvit

Now in this course we had to make up for lost time from 'Design 1', so it was a busy week. Here are two of the week's assignments.

The themes were 'giant monster attacks ancient Greece' and 'space pirate fight'. Great fun.

Clean Up (Balto)

Bit of a late update. Had the worst time editing this together. The file got huge. Anyway, this is the clean-up scene we did in school last year. It's a short scene from Balto.

In Space, Everything is Cool

This week we did clean-up, a rough scene from Balto. More fun than I thought it'd be. A great way to practice both drawing and animating. Not sure how to show it here, I mean there's not much point in showing the cleaned up version without the rough for comparison. And I'm not sure I'm allowed to show the rough.

Anyway, wanted to put something to look at so here's a paint scribble from today. She's hunting tentacle.

The Conductor

This was last week and it was fun, all capitals. We got to animate Danny from 'Cats Don't Dance' (a wonderful movie, you should see if you haven't already) conducting a piece of classical music. There were three excerpts to choose from - I chose a bit from Verdi's Aida.

It was a fun week, though it went up and down a lot. I got stuck on little things a couple times which was toiugh, but overall, this was a great week. I mean, it was the first time we got to use sound. Oh, and we were encouraged to try out using socalled 'smears' whenever we could. These drawings would only be shown for one frame and could be a severely stretched drawing or several drawings in one. It's basically a broad/quick movement confined to a single drawing - FUN!
